SERTAO / STRADE
CHOREOGRAPHY BY IVANA MESSINA
She stops herself to find her bearings,
She looks at her feet
Her feet disappeared
From these three sentences I decided to approach the Desert as a space belonging to something real or to the soul ,space time of mutation , migration , disorientation, illusion . My feet stop but the land underneath moves. Is it possible to designs routes in the desert?
From this question and many others is born Sertao/Strade , continuously evolving as the body living in it .In my choreography I decided to pose the body in relation with some jute bags and a musical instrument . Jute bags, emptied of the coffee which fills them , become a material adaptable to a lot of metamorphosis ,clothes, objects , natural elements. The guitar, suspending from the ceiling as a shape slightly moving while the wind blows , is a soul which fills the empty space and accompanies the songs.
WORKING WITH THE MATERIAL
Such an open theme as the desert and to be disoriented injected me the need to be anchored to a material which could give me a physical edge where I could find images and emotional points of view I optioned for jute because I needed a material reminding me of sand , earth and that could be at the same time transformable .
Hanging from the ceiling there is a guitar continuously moving . It represents a mirage , an echo, the time ,a partner in the empty space. To work with the guitar or any other musical instrument present on the scene ( violin , traverse flute) is a research on what a human body can create relating himself with an object having a special shape and a peculiar sound.
